Silicon Valley to Southern Africa describes a year in the life of Rob Myres, a former technology executive who he left his corporate position to spend a year in Namibia as a volunteer teacher. This narrative describes the challenges, frustrations, joys and sadness that he experienced as well as the enlightenment that led him to start a new charity called Mondesa Youth Opportunities (MYO). MYO uses education as a means of ending the cycle of poverty in the impoverished community of Mondesa, and is breaking down long-held paradigms about what can be accomplished when a few committed individuals devote themselves to a seemingly impossible task.
Rob worked for many years in the technology industry as a manager of education and development, based in London, San Francisco and Sydney. In addition to writing books and articles, Rob occasionally lectures on youth development initiatives and spends approximately 10 weeks each year in Namibia on MYO business. When not in Namibia, Rob lives in Idaho with his noble dog Mandela. What Others Are Saying About Silicon Valley to Southern Africa "Rob has written an intelligent and
emotional book in which he wrestles with some of the central ethical
dilemmas of our day. He leaves his lucrative corporate life to enter a
world of poverty and seeming limitation. What he discovers is not only
himself, but also a beautiful people and a path that leads to common
ground, to opportunity, and to very real hope." |
