Easter Tennis
Tournament -- 6-7 April 2007
This
Easter saw us taking nineteen keen and eager kids to the NTA
Junior Tournament that was sponsored by the Standard Bank. All
of the kids were from grade six and seven. They made our ages show
by being ready and eager at an eye squinting time of 6:40 am, bubbly
and bouncing while we were mumbling and grumbling. The chilly air
and the grey mist was enough to beckon a snooze out of the alarm
clock, but the excitement to be on the courts with the kids,
propelled us from our warm beds.
The tournament was
played at four different courts, as there were just over ninety
players in the competition. The Under 12 girls were chaperoned by
Julian, the Under 14 girls by Alexis, the Under 12 boys by Herman
and I supervised the Under 16 and Under 14 boys. Everyone was in
high spirits and the MYO kids kept up their positive attitude and
their best behaviour all day.
Ephraim put in a
really great effort playing in the Under 16’s. He kept his cool and
maintained his stealth position on the court in a really tough
league. The competition at that age level is really high.
Results:
The greatest
achievement for the tournament went to Paulina, who blitzed the
Under 12 girls competition by winning both the singles and the
doubles. Paulina is a star both on the tennis court and off. She is
a pleasure to watch and a great sportsperson. Her pure grace and
talent made the game look so easy.
We had two lucky
Back Draw winners, the first being Warren in the Under 14 boys. He
showed determination all day and deserved the win. Warren is a very
focused and keen tennis player.
The second Back
Draw winner was the talented tennis star Ndeshipanda in the Under 14
Girls. She is showing excellent results on the courts and her hard
training is starting to show through. Ndeshy is a quick footed and
sharp tennis player who deserves the recognition as a budding
champion.
The MYO kids really
show their true colors at tournaments such as these. Not only are
they well mannered and well behaved, but they are humble and
gracious winners and good humored losers. I was proud to be
associated with them and to cheer them on from the sideline, despite
the cold… |
